...it’s not like I haven’t had that realization for a while, but until now it wasn’t much more than daydreaming.
But with my new job and a little start-up on the side that is finally beginning to reap some profits, I feel like this is really feasible during the next 2-3 years. There are of course certain limitations:
1. It’s going to be a used one.
2. Buying such a car is unreasonable enough, so I am not going to try to make it more unreasonable by aiming for a Turbo, Turbo S, Special Unicorn Poop Edition with +600hp. I want a daily driver, not a garage queen.
3. It shouldn’t cost more than €50k.
4. In the best case scenario it’s going to be an early 991, because good lord that car is one of the sexiest 911 iterations out there. But I’d rather spend more money on a 981 or even 997 that has been well taken care of, than a prestigious hand-grenade. It depends on where the market moves in the next few years.
5. I don’t lose my job in between/go broke because of that darn start-up and have to use all that money I saved up to support myself and/or my family.

Just realize that after you buy a Porsche you’re going to ruin yourself from enjoying other cars (no matter how comparable, faster, or more exotic) for more than maybe a couple years...then it’s right back to Porsche you go.

See, that’s the problem. Until a couple of weeks ago, I was merely an admirer of Porsche’s many yet similar forms. But a noble soul allowed me to drive his 991 Targa and it ruined me forever. Especially since I drove a FWD Audi A6 the day after that.

Sounds correct! Responsiveness and smoothliness, you are ruined.

Shopping 981s right now! Same criteria. I’ve been looking for a while and keep getting shy with the trigger. That said, every once-in-a-while, I’ll tell myself that a used F-Type is sexier, or a new S3 would be more practical, or that I can get a loaded Mustang GT for way less, and then I’ll look at all those and go straight back to the 981. Sounds silly, but nothing gets the butterflies going quite like a Porsche does, for me, at least. I’ll have one by April ‘17 for sure.

Plus, let’s be honest here: While many see a Porsche as an unreasonable car, they’re actually way more reasonable than Maseratis or Ferraris. Not to mention that they’re more reliable than many new cars you can get in that price bracket. And yes, once something gets broken repair costs are usually a tad on the expensive side, but that’s in tune with every other German car.

Your plan sounds reasonable. If you work hard you have earned the toys.
My buddy bought a used 2014 Boxter S last night. 8500 Miles. A lovely grey and black. It is also a manual transmission. Super, super nice. I have a bit of envy there.
I also work basically across the street (runway really) from Porsche North America HQ. We see all the latest and greatest cars running around all the time. There is a lot of want there.

Well don’t get too far ahead of yourself, yes they are the most “reasonable” option within their bracket but just because they are the V6 Accord Coupe in their segment doesn’t mean the cost to own isn’t extremely high. I always say don’t touch a car unless you’re willing to spend 10% of the original MSRP in maintenance charges (including tires). Even if a warranty covers the big stuff, you’ll still end up spending that much extra in cleaning, modifications, a new living space, repair for a scrapped bumper, etc.

Boxsters are so cheap right now. If my beat up but lovable Miata wasn’t in the garage and I wouldn’t be executed by the wife a $5000 one would be mine. If things go wrong I’d part it, but if things go right... :D
I wanted an 80s SC so bad after college - and I had the money for it before the market went nuts, but decided to wait. This was a bad idea, because no 911 for me and that cash got raided for every crisis that came afterward.
